Daffodil Day General Information

Bell Buckle Chamber of Commerce Daffodil Day is Saturday, March 16, 2019.

This quaint little festival began in 1978 to celebrate the coming of  Spring and the thousands of daffodils that line the roads and farmlands  for a six mile stretch of highway leading into Bell Buckle. Local lore  says that ol’ Sawney Webb (who founded the renowned Webb School in 1870)  began the mass plantings over a hundred years ago as  ‘character-building’ discipline for some of the school’s more  challenging students. In the mid-1940’s, a former Webb School janitor  named Eugene Brady, Sr. launched an ambitious five-year planting program  to further beautify the town. Now, every March, Bell Buckle bursts into  full bloom with a colorful explosion of daffodils, and marks the  arrival of spring by inviting everyone to come enjoy a day full of fun,  family-friendly activities.  The  event normally features a Daffodil flower show. There are categories  and several divisions in which even the novice gardener can enter.   Containers are provided for each specimen except in the Collection and  Arrangement classes.  In addition, there have been free programs offered  with speakers in the areas of bee keeping, honey, and container  gardening.  Vendors are scattered throughout the downtown area with many  offering bulbs, spring plantings, and more wares celebrating the warmth  of springtime.  In  addition, Bell Buckle is the smallest town in Tennessee to have Tree  City USA status.  Bell Buckle celebrates Arbor Day during this festival  and offers free tree seedlings to all until the green supplies run out.   It’s like taking a little piece of Bell Buckle home.
